David Phillips has been immersed in the world of church music for
almost thirty five years. Being hired in 1971 as the director for a folk
group led to positions as music director for various parishes in Southern
California. Through the years, while teaching music in Catholic grade
schools and working at the parish level, David discovered a need for
recorded music of both contemporary and traditional church music.
Remembering the years in Catholic schools, time spent singing in a boys
choir at his parish, and his love for the traditional hymns of the church,
David formed Gentle Spirit Music Productions in 1988 and began to release
albums of instrumental arrangements of traditional Catholic music, plus
albums of his own compositions. He continued on with his musical endeavors,
arranging music for other artists, performing in the studio, and expanding
his catalogue of recorded music, which now includes albums of contemporary
and traditional religious music, the Rosary, Stations of the Cross,
Lullabies and more of his own original music. Two of his recent albums, "Be
Not Afraid" and "Angels Around Us" have won awards for best instrumental
album of the year for two consecutive years from The United Catholic Musician and Video
Association. In the fall of 1990, he, with his wife, Linda, moved their four
sons to Eugene, Oregon, where he accepted the position of music director at
St. Mary's Catholic Church. He has worked there for the past fifteen years
and continues to add albums to the Gentle Spirit catalogue. He also works
with a number of other artists including Robert Kochis, Seraphim, and His
Majesty's Musicians. |
